LECTURE|"The Development of the American Political System and African Americans in American Politics" Lecture Series Successfully Held

On October 21-24, invited by the School of Political Science and Public Administration, Dr. Benjamin D. Reese, a professor at Duke University in the United States, lectured at the Qingdao campus of Shandong University on the topic of "The Development of the American Political System and African Americans in American Politics".

Professor Benjamin D. Reese held discussions and lectured with teachers and students in our college on the topic of "American Government System and Its Development". He explained the political structure, presidential elections, and political party system of the United States in detail, and put forward his own views on its disadvantages and deficiencies. In the course of explaining the first half of the American colonial history, British colonialism, the bloody and violent Westward Movement, and other issues were addressed, also, the Declaration of Independence and the drafting and formulation of the US Constitution in the 17-18th century were explained in detail.

 In the lecture "African Americans in American Politics", Professor Reese traced the history of American slavery and the early participation of African Americans in the American political process, and described the current position of African Americans in American politics. In a lecture titled "African American’s Leadership in Business, Technology, Entertainment and Sports", Professor Reese first briefly explained the concept of "leadership", starting from "the great man theory" and "the situational leadership theory". Then he introduced the deeds of leading African Americans in the fields of business, entertainment, and politics, and the important role played by African Americans in some major historical events. Finally, he discussed the constraints of racism and discrimination, and the struggle for excellence in these areas. In the above discussions and lectures, Professor Reese also answered many questions raised by teachers and students about the American political system and the US presidential election to deepen their understanding of the American politics.

 

Dr. Benjamin D. Reese, is a professor at Duke University. Ph.D. in Psychology from Rutgers University in 1978, and Vice President of Duke University from 2007-2019.5. He is responsible for equality, diversity, and inclusive policies. He is a research expert in American ethnic relations and African-Americans.
