On September 9, American composer Rachel C. Walker, Chinese percussionist Zhang Yongyun, Chinese pipa player Xia Yuyan, Chinese writer and cross-domain artist Autumn Tsai were invited to make a concert-style lecture on "Contrast and Recursion: Retracing Nanyin" at Zhensheng Courtyard, Qingdao Campus. The lecture was hosted by the School of Political Science and Public Administration (PSPA), and was moderated by the Dean of the School of Political Science and Public Administration, and attracted many professors and students.

In this concert-style lecture, the speech and performance complemented each other. The composer Rachel introduced her latest research on traditional Chinese music: the percussion and Nanpa duet Ebb and flow, and explored the similarities and the differences between traditional Nanyin and modern music through traditional techniques and notation, combining with the rhythm and meaning of language. Invited poet Autumn Tsai created the text part of the performance work, "Xiangsi", based on the original Nanyin lyrics "A Page of Longing" and "Growth by One's Own". Autumn Tsai and Rachel introduced the work together as a dialogue between the poet and the composer.

After the speech, the pipa player Xia Yuyan and the percussionist Zhang Yongyun performed the work for the audience. Zhang Yongyun broke through the tradition and selected the tambourine as a musical instrument. She played with her fingers and palms, shaking the drum to make the cymbals sound, while the fingers rolled the metal pieces to produce a continuous sound, she also used her finger to rub along the edge of the tympanic membrane to drive the metal pieces to create a rapid rolling effect. Then, the two performers performed an impromptu show, which brought the audience a fresh and exciting audio-visual imagination, making them break into thunderous applause.

Finally, writer Autumn Tsai and percussionist Zhang Yongyun improvised a piece based on "The Old Man and the Sea". The professors and classmates on the scene asked questions about the theme and content of the lecture. The performers gave answers and exchanged ideas with those present. The lecture was successfully concluded under a warm atmosphere.
