LECTURE|China's Role in Global Economic and Environmental Governance: The Case of the G20"

On July 9, Prof. Yves Tiberghien, Director Emeritus of the Institute of Asian Research at the University of British Columbia, Canada, was invited to the Institute of Governance of Shandong University to give a report entitled "China's Role in Global Economic and Environmental Governance: The Case of the G20”. Xu Yang of Institute of Public Governance at Shandong University presided over the report. The students of the School of Political Science and Public Administration and the Institute of Governance, as well as those who have a strong interest in the role of China in global governance, attended the report.

Professor Yves Tiberghien first explained the proper nouns of international politics in the context of different disciplines. Later, taking Singapore's diplomatic wisdom as an example, he explored the major issues of the G20 such as “climate change” and “global economic stability”, and explained the status quo of China's voice and participation in G20 affairs. Subsequently, he continued to invoke the example of the Belt and Road Initiative’s construction and the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank project to explain in detail the important role played by China in promoting economic development along the Belt and Road Initiative improving people's living standards and infrastructure.

In the second half of the report, the students spoke freely under the guidance of Prof. Yves Tiberghien, sharing their insights on China's “global governance program” during Zheng He's Expedition, and critically expressing their thoughts on the meaning of the “governance plan” at the time to global governance today. In addition, students exchanged views on the understanding and solutions of hot issues such as the international economics. After the report, students actively asked questions, and Professor Yves Tiberghien further answered in detail and had in-depth communication with the students.


Yves Tiberghien (Ph.D. Stanford University, 2002) is a Professor of Political Science, Director Emeritus of the Institute of Asian Research, Co-Director of the Center for Japanese Research, and Executive Director of the China Council at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Dr. Tiberghien is a Harvard Academy Scholar (2004-2006 in residence). He is a Senior Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada, a Senior Fellow with the Global Summitry Project at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, a visiting professor at Tokyo University, and a visiting Professor at Sciences Po Paris. He is a Faculty Associate at the EHESS in Paris.  

He specializes in East Asian comparative political economy, international political economy, and global economic and environmental governance, with an empirical focus on China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
