Undergraduate Students of School of Political Science and Public Administration Achieved Good Results in 2018 China Public Policy Case Analysis Competition in Tsinghua University

On August 25, the finale event of the 2018 China Public Policy Case Analysis Competition held in Tsinghua University. Our undergraduate team performed well in the competition and secured second prize and a third prize, accounting for one-third of the total awards.

The case contest, which lasted for four months from the preliminary stage to the final, attracted 490 undergraduate teams from 159 colleges and universities across the country, with only 18 teams were competing in the final. With the positive spirit, encouragement and guidance of our teachers, our university students stood out from 490 teams, and a total of 3 teams made it to the finals, two of which won the second and third prize respectively. Our team became beloved for all, and the host Tsinghua University’s teachers and students valued our team’s efforts and determination in the competition and gave good reviews.

The team “Assisting Villages with their Dreams” (members: Yu Xiao, Sun Jun, Wang Yuxuan, Wang Haoyu, Sun Yufei) directed by teacher Ma Ben and Lou Suping won the second prize in the contest. This team focused on rural land equities. It compared some practical cases of two villages in Zaozhuang City, they examined development process, and operating mechanisms as well as its derived value of the public affairs governance system: "pooling of land as shares". A new type of land circulation model in rural areas, which provided detailed cases and innovative ideas for solving the current dilemma of "who will cultivate land".

The "Night Market Rebirth" team was led by Ma Ben (members: Chen Yunzhu, Cheng Yijia, Qiao Yafei, Zheng Han, Wang Liang). Their project named “Reborn late at night” – urban mobile vendors’ governance 2.0 model – which took Jinan Huayuan Road night market diversion relocation as a case study won the third prize. The team focused on the actual practice of space management in urban China. Their investigation lasted long enough to 17 months, taking the dispersion and relocation of Honglou night market in Jinan as a case the team has conducted interviews in four major subjects including city inspectors, citizens, vendors and takeover enterprises in the sidetracked districts. Its purpose was to explore the appropriate path of rationalisation and redistribution of urban space in a crucial period to construct a civilised city and to deliver an upgraded path to the management of urban mobile vendors’ version 2.0.

The team of “Dreamers” (members: An Naer, Hong da, Qin Mengzhen), directed by professor Ma Ben, also made it to the final with their works “Approaches to Solving Nimby Problems in Industrial Enterprises-A case study based on Shandong Luxin's experience”. In recent years, there has been a high incidence of pollution-like nimby conflicts. In order to explore the achievements of Liaocheng City in Shandong Province in resolving the nimby conflicts, the team of “Dreamers” conducted field investigations. Through visits to relevant departments of the Liaocheng government, heavy chemical enterprises and villagers around the enterprises, the team of “Dreamers” summed up the successful experience of Liaocheng as "Luxin Mode", and the internal mechanism of “Luxin Mode”, obtained through data analysis, provided valuable experience for resolving the nimby conflicts.

Tsinghua Case Analysis Competition of Public Policy has been held for three consecutive sessions. With the theme of "The Reform And Development Of China's Reform And Opening Up Over The Past 40 Years", this competition inspires undergraduates and master students to focus on the achievements and problems in seven major fields, including the economic, political, cultural, social and ecological civilization construction and the Party building and the government's own construction of our country over the past 40 years of reform and opening up. Students are inspired to start with concrete cases, to pay active attention to the problems of public policy, to deeply understand the reality of China's national conditions, and to effectively enhance the acute awareness of problems, scientific analytical ability and innovative mode of thinking. The students of our college have achieved excellent results in this competition for three consecutive years.

In recent years, our school attaches great importance to the quality of students, actively promotes the teaching reform of undergraduate education and create a learning atmosphere of moral learning and noble thinking, stimulate students' innovative thinking and promote academic innovation ability. The achievements of academic innovation continue to materialise, and outstanding results have been obtained in other competitions such as the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic Works Competition, the Shanghai Jiaotong University College Student Case Study Competition of City Governance and many other national student innovation competitions.
