Research Institute of Political Parties (RIPP), Shandong University

The Research Institute of Political Parties of Shandong University was established in April 2003 with the approval of the General Office of Shandong University. The mission of the institute is to study about concepts, theories and different ways to improve and develop the code of behaviour and character, practices of discipline in the party and training of people, educate about political events and serve society.

The institute staff includes both professionals and part-time staff members from the campus and outside. The director of the institute is Professor Wang Shaoxing, and the deputy directors are Professor Zang Xiuling, Professor Cui Guitian, Professor Fang Lei and Professor Zhang Shihai. Currently, there are 25 researchers, out which 12 have high professional titles, 12 have doctorates, and four are working as part-time researchers (overseas). The Research Institute of Political Party is affiliated to the school of Political Science and Public Administration of Shandong University. The institute was listed as a Theoretical Research Base of Political Party in Shandong Province in November 2006, and also listed as a National Think Tank Alliance Unit in 2017.

The institute focuses its research on party theory and comparative study of party politics. Four identified domains which have stable and clear research directions are:

First, the study of Party Principles. This group is led by Wang Shaoxing, Fang Lei, and others. The research aim of this group is to find the general regularity information, development and function of the party and its bodies, essentially about the working class party. This group study History of the political parties (based on working class), would compare parties’ policies in different periods around the world.

Second, the study of Chinese Politics and Party (CPC). This group is led by Lv Lianren, Zhang Shihai, and others. The research aim is to deepen the theoretical understanding of political party and politics in contemporary China, through a comprehensive study of the history of the Communist Party of China and current realities.

Third, the study of Overseas Communist Parties. This group is led by Cui Guitian, Zang Xiuling, Huang Dengxue and Li Yazhou, and others. The research aim is to provide a useful reference for the self-construction and governance of the Communist Party of China, through the comparative study of the ‘ruling class theory’ and practice of ruling communist parties overseas.

Fourth, the study of the Left Wing Parties in Europe and America. This group is led by Yu Haiqing and Li Hong, and others. The research aim is to study the historical evolution and political practice of the Western Social Democratic Parties and the Green Parties, and to gain insight, familiarise and understand emerging dynamics in political parties across the world and to study what are methods Communist Party of China could adapt to strengthen its governance capacity.
