Center for South Asian Studies (CSAS), Shandong University

The Center for South Asian Studies SDU was established on March 17, 2015. It is a research institute affiliated to School of Political Science and Public Administration of Shandong University. The Center has 9 scientific researchers and 16 part-time staff members. Professor Zhang Shulan is the director of the centre. The CSAS of SDU currently has 5 Chinese doctoral students, 4 foreign doctoral students, 8 Chinese master students, and 8 foreign master students.

Research direction:

The Center for South Asian Studies has five research directions: politics & diplomacy, economy & science and technology, military & security, society, and history & culture.

Academic Achievements:

Full-time researchers of the Center for South Asian Studies and their representative achievements are as follows:

(1) Zhang Shulan, Ph.D., professor, whose research direction is South Asian politics, economy and diplomacy. Her main achievements: Research on Indian Economic Reform of the Rao Government Xinhua Publishing House, 2003; Environmental Politics in India, Shandong University Press, 2010; Research on the Left in India’s Party Politics, Shandong People's Publishing House, 2017. She has completed the National Social Science Fund Project “Research on Left-wing Party Issues in Indian Party Politics” and undertaken project of Key Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences Research of the Ministry of Education “Research on the Thoughts and Practices of the Left-wing in South Asia”.

(2) Xing Zhanjun, Ph.D., professor, whose research direction is public management. Main achievements: “Estimation and Enlightenment of Bhutan's Gross National Happiness”, contained in Dongyue Tribune, No. 6 2013 and so on.

(3) Qi Jianhong, Ph.D., professor, whose research direction is economy. Main achievements: “Comparison and Enlightenment of China’s and India's Foreign Direct Investment”, contained in Asia-Pacific Economic Review, No. 4, 2007; "India's ‘New policy toward Foreign Capital’ and its enlightenment to China”, contained in International Economics and Trade Research, No. 4, 2006, etc.

(4) Han Jishao, Ph.D., professor, whose research direction is the history of religious science and technology thoughts. Main achievements: "The spread and influence of Indian Long-live Prescription in the Tang Dynasty", contained in Studies in the History of National Sciences Vol.31 No.2, 2012; “Investigation on Introduction of Taoist alchemy to India”, contained in Religious Studies, No. 3, 2015, etc.

(5) Wang Jianmin, professor, whose research direction is scientific socialism. Main achievement by guiding doctoral student Guo Leiqing: "Constitutional Reforms and Ethnic Conflicts in Sri Lanka", contained in Issues of Contemporary World Socialism, No. 4, 2015; “Analysis on the Dilemma of Democratization of Multi-ethnic countries with compact communities: Taking Nigeria and Sri Lanka as Examples,” contained in Academic Exploration, No. 9 of 2016, etc.

(6) Ma Rongjiu, Ph.D., Associate Professor, whose research direction is security and diplomacy. Main achievements: "Foreign Research on Territory Disputes between China and India", contained in Contemporary China History Studies, No. 2, 2007; "Domestic Politics and Foreign Policy Decision-Making: India's Decision-making in Sino-Indian Territorial Dispute (1959-1962)”, contained in World Economics and Politics, No. 12, 2009; "‘Victim Psychology’ and Foreign Policy Decisions-MakingIndia's Decision-making in Sino-Indian Territorial Dispute (1959-1962)”, contained in International Political Quarterly, No. 2, 2008; “The Nehru Government’s Border Policy towards China: An Analytical Framework”, contained in South Asian Studies, No. 2, 2010.

(7) Jiao Pei, Ph.D., Associate Professor, research direction is the comparison between Chinese and foreign political systems. Main achievements: “Research on Complexity of Democratization in Multi-ethnic Countries: taking Bhutan as an example”, contained in South Asian Studies, No. 3, 2012.

Profile of the Center:

Main international academic exchange activities since the establishment of the Center for South Asian Studies. Since its establishment, the institute has been focusing on strengthening cooperation and exchange with universities and research institutions at home and abroad in recent years.

(1) In 2015, Shandong University signed a memorandum of cooperation with Jawaharlal Nehru University of India. (MOU).

(2) The Center for South Asian Studies of Shandong University has established close academic exchange and cooperation with the Center for East Asian Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India. And it has regularly invited Professor Srikanth Kondapalli, Chairperson of the Centre for East Asian Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, to conduct academic activities such as academic lectures and short-term courses in our Center and School of Political Science and Public Administration SDU.

(3) Since 2008, the Center has invited and received several famous Indian scholars, such as T.G.Suresh, Professor Srikanth Condapalli, Professor Swaran Singh, Professor Alka Acharya, Madhavi Thampi and so on to Shandong University for long-term and short-term exchanges and visits for eight times.

(4) On April 18, 2016, the Center received a think tank delegation of 11 people from four South Asia countries (India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka) to visit Shandong University. On April 18, 2016, the delegation of peace and security think tanks from four countries in South Asia visited the Center for South Asian Studies and had a discussion with teachers and students of the Centre. Vice Minister Liu Mingli, and Jiang Hongmin of Department of International Affairs, Cao Xianqiang, Dean of the School of Political Science and Public Administration, and Li Jishi, Dean and Director of the Foreign Affairs Center, also attended and addressed the meeting.

(5) On November 25-27, 2016, the Center held “the Belt and Road Initiative in South Asia” International Academic High-end Forum. More than 60 domestic and foreign experts participated in the forum, and national mainstream media gave passionate attention and reports.

(6) The Center for South Asian Studies SDU hosted the 2017 Annual Meeting of Chinese Association for South Asian Studies “the Belt and Road Initiative and South Asian Studies” successfully.

The forthcoming collective research property of the CSAS is an overview of national conditions of the eight South Asian countries among the countries along the “Belt and Road Initiative”, which is funded by the National Publication Foundation. Dalian Maritime University Press will publish the whole set in October 2018.
