Profile

Yao Shifan (姚仕帆) is a researcher and lecturer at Shandong University’s School of Political Science and Public Administration. He received MA in New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) at History and Political Science Department with a concentration on Political Theory. His thesis supervisor was Professor Abbas Manafy, a popular scholar on class theory. Then he moved to Taiwan and obtained PhD in Asia-Pacific Studies at National Chengchi University (台湾政治大学)’s International Doctoral Program in Asia-Pacific Studies (IDAS) under the supervision of Professor Liu Fukuo (刘复国). Dr. Fukuo is a well-known scholar on the Asia-Pacific security studies.

Prior to moving to Shandong University in December 2015, Shifan worked as a researcher for a year (2014-2015) at Academia Sinica (中央研究院), a well-known comprehensive research institute located in Taipei city. At Shandong University, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher for more than two years until he was appointed in June 2018 as an Associate Professor. Currently he is engaged in both research and teaching.

Shifan’s research interests include history of political theory, theories of international relations, The East Asian regional development and the regionalism/regionalization process, energy security, China’s foreign policy, Belt and Road Initiative, and Asia-Pacific security. He enjoys engaging in research on both policy and theory-related questions, without confining himself in a specific research line. Furthermore, he takes delight in joint research with both colleagues and students.

Thus, since 2014, he has published both individually and jointly a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals on a wide variety of subjects, involving political and theoretical analysis. Some of the journals in which his works have appeared are: International Critical Thought, Europe-Asia Studies, International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, Journal of Chinese Political Science, and Issues and Studies.

Other than engaging in research, Shifan has also been teaching a number of classes at BA, MA and PhD levels, including Research Methods, East Asia Regional Development, Comparative Politics, Asia-Pacific Security, and Geopolitics. In his classes, Shifan likes to engage students, provide updated data, introduce latest trends in theory and policy, and ensure an interactive and energetic classroom environment.
